Moving workloads to the cloud can cut costs, improve scalability, and modernize your IT—but only if you do it in a planned way. Here are five tips we follow (and recommend) for a smoother cloud migration.
- Assess first. Understand what you’re moving: dependencies, data flows, and compliance needs. A clear inventory and a simple “lift-and-shift vs. refactor” view will guide your roadmap.
- Start small. Pick a non-critical app or a single team’s workload for the first migration. Learn from it, then scale to bigger systems.
- Secure by default. Use identity and access controls, encryption in transit and at rest, and network segmentation from day one. Don’t treat security as an afterthought.
- Plan for rollback. Have a way to revert or run in hybrid mode if something goes wrong. That reduces risk and makes the team more confident to move.
- Train and communicate. Make sure your team knows how to operate and monitor the new environment. Good documentation and a clear support path prevent post-migration surprises.
