5 Tips for a Smoother Cloud Migration

Plan well, start small, and keep security in focus.

Moving workloads to the cloud can cut costs, improve scalability, and modernize your IT—but only if you do it in a planned way. Here are five tips we follow (and recommend) for a smoother cloud migration.

  1. Assess first. Understand what you’re moving: dependencies, data flows, and compliance needs. A clear inventory and a simple “lift-and-shift vs. refactor” view will guide your roadmap.
  2. Start small. Pick a non-critical app or a single team’s workload for the first migration. Learn from it, then scale to bigger systems.
  3. Secure by default. Use identity and access controls, encryption in transit and at rest, and network segmentation from day one. Don’t treat security as an afterthought.
  4. Plan for rollback. Have a way to revert or run in hybrid mode if something goes wrong. That reduces risk and makes the team more confident to move.
  5. Train and communicate. Make sure your team knows how to operate and monitor the new environment. Good documentation and a clear support path prevent post-migration surprises.
